Ow ya goin’, my new friends? My name is Isaac Turner and I’m a student at the University of Queensland. One of the questions I’m commonly asked is, “…Why didn’t you apply to the University of New South Wales. Don’t they have a better IT program?”

The second most common question I’m asked is, “What’s a VPN?”

Usually this question comes from some geri in my family, my dodgy uncle who never bothered to learn how to work a desktop much less a smartphone. If it’s not a family member, it’s one of the ockers I share a flat with. My roommate Derek got a massive virus one time and I told him, “That’s why you should be using a VPN.”

From there, he started pestering me day and night about all things VPN. That’s when the lightbulb went off and I decided to start this site. I figured with my extensive knowledge and research into VPNs, I could help other people to better understand what VPNs are all about and why they should be using one.

Let me tell you, it’s a very smart idea to use a VPN, especially now that Australia is being targeted by sophisticated cyber hackers. Now a lot of people think that this is solely a threat against private security firms and large corporations, but as anyone who has been the victim of malware can tell you, cyber attacks can strike anyone at any time.

I won’t bore you shitless with the details, but here’s the crux of it. There are people and companies all over the globe that are looking to monitor your online activity and gain purchase to your personal data. VPNs stop them dead in their tracks. Period.

And that’s not all. As we saw back in August, the Australian government has blocked no less than 59 websites including torrent sites and streaming services. Utilizing a VPN, you can freely (and safely) browse all of these sites with ease and anonymity.

Avoid Free VPNS - Don't Have Your Info Sold to 3rd Parties
I would strongly recommend not utilizing free VPNS servers for some simple reasons. User data is routed through a central hub that collects and aggregates information. This information is then sold to 3rd parties. User information is commoditized and sold to pay for the “free” VPN. If you’re not looking to spend money on a VPN, I would suggest simply not using one.

ExpressVPN—Fastest & Most Secure

Express VPN

When it comes to choosing a VPN, there are two things I consider straight away. A VPN needs to be fast enough where I can stream videos without those buffering issues that makes us all as cross as a frog in a sock and it needs to provide total privacy.

ExpressVPN meets my needs in both of those departments and then some. I’ve been using their service for about a year and a half, and I’ve gotta say, they’re fair dinkum. It’s compatible with all of your devices and features a rock solid 256-bit encryption.

With servers all across 94 countries, you can use ExpressVPN anywhere you go. Personally, I like to travel when I’m not at university. I used VPN while on holiday in New Zealand and I couldn’t believe the speeds I was still able to achieve.

What’s more, ExpressVPN’s live chat is the best of the best. Any time I had a question about the service or a concern about connectivity, they responded immediately and not with one of those pat, copy-and-paste-style answers but with a human quality that I really appreciated.

Their 12-month plan may cost big bikkies compared to the other VPNs on this list, but when you use their service, you’ll know that you got your money’s worth. And for that extra assurance a lot of us hairy knuckles need, they provide a 30-day money back guarantee, but trust me, you won’t need it. This one is a digger when it comes to concrete online protection.

I like ExpressVPN because it boasts impressive advanced features such as the unique Speed Test which shows you how fast it really is. Their referral program is an added bonus that allows you to introduce friends to the service. And as I said before, their customer support is truly one of a kind.

VyPr VPN—The Second Best Option

Vypr VPN

This is one that a friend introduced me to. At the time, he was one of those neckbeards who lounged around his flat all day in his grundies, surfing for the unmentionable stuff. One day, I caught him looking at a video that has since been seared into my memory, one that I can’t recount here in all good faith.

Suffice it to say, it involved a taut, young Sheila and a donkey. Nuff said. Of course, the first thing I said to my mate was, “I hope you’re using a VPN.”

That’s when he introduced me to this grouse service, a company with servers in 70 countries that offers unlimited streaming. What’s really excellent about VyPr VPN is that they have complete ownership of their entire network. That’s something you can’t say about most VPNs out there.

This means that you have a guarantee of total security. Your data will never be compromised. Add to that the fact that you can use VyPr on up to three of your devices and you’ve got a real prezzy on your hands.

Like ExpressVPN, VyPr VPN offers a 30-day money back guarantee, but so far as I can tell, you won’t be asking for it. With their signature Chameleon protocol, all underlying data is heavily encrypted, ensuring that no one will get the jump on you online.

When you sign up for VyprVPN, you get 50% off right off the bat.

There are a lot of good things I could say about this one, but first and foremost, I like that they are up front about the fact that they do not do business with third parties and they pride themselves on fast speeds.

The thing that makes this one a real rip snorter, though, is the commitment to being truly unlimited. Right out the gate, they tell you that there are no download caps, no restrictions and no server switching fees. That’s right as right can get.

Pure VPN—Another Solid Choice

Pure VPN Logo

If you can’t afford ExpressVPN or VyprVPN, Pure VPN has got you covered. They offer competitive pricing, a money back guarantee and live chat. Essentially, you’re getting everything that you would want out of the previous two but for less money.

While I can’t say that they’re my favorite VPN in Australia, I will say that they’re a reputable service with plenty to bring to the table. You get total anonymity and a variety of advanced features. In fact, it’s worth giving them a go for the features alone.

Unlike many other VPNs, Pure VPN provides anti-virus, anti-malware, URL filtering, ad-blocking, intrusion detection and prevention and app filtering. No matter what device you’re using, you won’t be penetrated.

I was positively gobsmacked when I first tested this one out. I couldn’t believe how user-friendly their interface was and totally in awe of the sheer volume of features I was looking at. For the frugal type, this is the VPN to go with.

Hide My Ass—The Least Recommend VPN

HideMyAss Logo

I’d like to give this one’s creators a gobful, let me tell ya. I only used it once for under a week and I was utterly disappointed. The hoons that run this service regularly shut users out at will and even discontinue service without giving a justifiable reason.

If you’re looking to Netflix and chill in Australia, Hide My Ass does not protect your ass. In fact, they shut your ass out. On no less than three occasions, I attempted to stream Netflix using HMA and each time, I was shut out of my account.

On the third go, I was told that my account had been deactivated. No reason was forthcoming and I wasn’t offered a refund on the rest of my monthly plan. In other words, I had paid for a month’s worth of service and I got what amounted to four days of lackluster speeds and dodgy connectivity.

This one is enough to elicit a liquid laugh from any avid VPN user worth their salt. It’s not for the serious surfer and it’s not for…really anybody. I wouldn’t even recommend this one to beginners as it will only give them the wrong idea about virtual private networks.

A bare bones VPN that saves your log sessions and has a bad reputation for sharing them with law enforcement and the like, Hide My Ass has nothing to recommend it. There are no advanced features, no fast speeds and absolutely no reason for it to even exist in the current marketplace.

What is a VPN for Australia?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It is a versatile online service that delivers privacy and security to those seeking to shield their personal data from malicious cyber criminals and shoddy electronic companies.

how-vpn-protects-you

By providing their customers with proxy servers and their own IP addresses, they ensure that your actual IP address cannot be seen and you are able to explore anything you want at any time with total anonymity.

End to end encryption means that the Australian government cannot spy on your online activity nor can anyone else. Your activity is private and secure at all times so long as you are using your VPN account.

With privacy in place, you can make like you’re anywhere in the world. You can access sites from other countries with the click of a few keys. Ever wonder what the American Netflix library looks like? Well, now you’ve got it and nobody is any the wiser.

VPNs give you the ultimate online access you’ve always been dreaming of with absolutely no hassle. All of the VPNs listed above have servers in Australia which means that you will never have to deal with geographically-restricted content ever again.

Strike that. You will deal with that geographically-restricted content. Only it will no longer be restricted. You’ll have all the good oil you need, whether you’re a journo or just some kid who wants to watch YouTube videos without getting locked out because of your location.

Why Do I Need a VPN?

If you need to ask, you may have already been stonkered by the system. It’s really quite simple. The big software companies and online media giants like Apple would like to own your soul. People like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are using you as targets.

how-encryption-worksEvery move you make online is being watched, filtered and eventually monetized. Only you’re not the one monetizing it, they are. They do this by collecting your data and selling it off to the highest bidder.

To make matters worse, you have other people watching you. Criminals who would do you harm. Identity thieves, hackers, all sorts of hoons who would like to send you ransomware, who would like to steal your credit card information, etc.

VPNs serve as blankets that keep you cozy and secure, ensuring that you can sleep soundly at night, knowing that no one is going to get their filthy mitts on your bank statements, search history or any other sensitive information.

At a time when the entire world seems to be hell-bent on attacking each other via computer, now is the time to protect yourself proper with a VPN.

Is it Safe to Use a VPN in Australia?

The answer is an unequivocal yes. VPN encryption makes it so that nobody can see what you are doing online. This means that you will have total freedom to peruse whatever you like whenever you like. As I mentioned earlier, the Australian government has blocked piracy sites. With a VPN, you will have access to all of these sites and more.

how hackers can steal your information

Can I Use a Free VPN in Australia?

Absolutely! Though I wouldn’t recommend it. Some of the VPNs I’ve listed here do offer free plans and you can definitely sign up for a trial if you are so inclined, but it is important to keep in mind that sites and services that advertise themselves as free are generally pretty dodgy.

As stated above, free services collect your personal data and sell it to third parties in order to afford to pay for their supposedly “free” service. It is always best to pay for a VPN if you’re going to be using your account frequently.

There’s really no good reason to use a VPN at all if you’re going to go with a free VPN.

What Can I Do with a VPN in Australia?

What can’t you do, mate? With a solid VPN, the online world’s your oyster. You can stream content, downloaded unlimited files, look at whatever you want, whenever you want, and do it all anonymously.

By circumnavigating geographical restrictions, you are able to view or read anything that your heart desires with the click of a few buttons.

Can I Use a VPN on my Phone or Tablet?

The VPNs on my list are all compatible with Android, iPhone, PC, Mac, et al. Have at it.

My Final Thoughts

Even if it seems a bit complicated, you can be sure that VPNs are a smart solution. Utilizing any one of the VPNs on this list (save for Hide My Ass) will make for a positive, user-friendly experience. From the low prices to the advanced features, you’ll be more than happy.
